Grease, Grit & Gratitude
June 12th is National Automotive Service Professionals Day, and there’s no better time to shine a light on the crew that keeps River City moving—literally. With nearly 800 trucks, trailers, and pieces of equipment in our fleet, it’s a full-time grind keeping all of it up and running. From routine shop maintenance to middle-of-the-night roadside calls, our guys in Fleet stay in the trenches—wrenches in hand, rain or shine—to make sure everything with wheels stays mission-ready.
It ain’t easy work. It’s hot, dirty, and sometimes downright unforgiving. But the job gets done, and it gets done right. If you’ve ever jumped in a truck that ran like it should or hauled gear across the state without a hiccup, you’ve got our mechanics to thank. They don’t do it for the spotlight. They do it because they know crews count on that gear showing up ready to roll—especially when the stakes are high and the storm’s rolling in.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE…
We’d be leaving out a big part of the operation if we didn’t give props to the folks holding it down behind the scenes. The admin team, Abree Roberts & Tamika Huovinen, in Fleet is the glue—tracking trucks,, lining up repairs, locking in appointments, and keeping tabs on every mile our rigs run. When something breaks, they’re already on the phone lining up a fix before the wheels stop turning. They may not carry a toolbox, but they keep this machine humming.
So this week—Automotive Service Professionals Week—take a minute. Shake a hand. Drop off a Gatorade. Say thanks to the men who keep the shop running and the crew trucks on the road. And don’t forget the folks inside who make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
To the team in the bay, out in the field, and at the desk—you keep River City powered, moving, and safe. We appreciate every one of you.
HELP A MECHANIC OUT
What you can do to help Fleet keep costs down & trucks on the road.
Daily DVIRs aka Pre-Trip Inspections
When you fill out your DVIR, think of it like a safety checklist to keep your truck and crew rolling. Look over the brakes, tires, lights, mirrors, and wipers—basically anything that helps you see, stop, or stay safe. Check your fluids, make sure the horn works, and don’t forget the fire extinguisher and emergency gear. If you’ve got a trailer, check the connections and securement.
If something’s broken or off, submit a jotform so it gets fixed before the next trip. Better to catch it now than deal with it on the side of the road.
Protecting What Drives Us—Our People
Every time you hit the road, you're carrying more than just tools and equipment—you’re carrying the safety and trust of your crew, your family, and River City. That’s why we’ve got Motive’s AI-powered dash cams riding shotgun. They’re not here to micromanage—they’re here to help. The system is designed to give you multiple gentle nudges when it detects something that might be unsafe, like following too close or picking up your phone. Only after repeated warnings does it clip a short piece of the event for review. And just to be clear—there’s no live streaming going on. No one is watching you drive in real time.
We know being behind the wheel isn’t just a job—it’s a responsibility. The goal here isn’t to hand out write-ups; it’s to help everyone get home safe at the end of the day. Staying alert and making smart choices out there protects you, your crew, and the drivers around you. So keep your eyes up, hands on the wheel, and know that this system is just another layer of protection—for River City and for you.
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 15th
This Father's Day, we want to pause and give a nod to the men who carry more than tools—they carry the weight of responsibility, the pride of providing, and the quiet strength of showing up, day after day. Whether you're a new dad figuring it out as you go, or a seasoned one who’s walked through every stage, your impact runs deeper than you know. The way you teach by example, protect without asking for praise, and love without loud words—it leaves a mark that lasts for generations. So here’s to the dads who get up before the sun and still find time to throw a ball, give advice, or just sit and listen.
You are appreciated. You are seen. And you’re doing better than you think.
A few words of advice from one RCC Dad to another
“Slow down every chance you get, enjoy the time you have with them now. Be the man you want your son to be & be the man you want your daughter to marry.”
~ Dallas Mullens, River City General Foreman
“Whip the sh!# out of those little rascals – Don’t raise no brats.”
~ Walter Manning, Executive Vice President
The Father of River City Construction
William “Dwain” Edwards poured his heart, soul, and every ounce of grit into building River City Construction from the ground up in 1975. Starting from his own home in Washington, North Carolina, he earned trust the hard way—through long days, honest work, and an unshakable respect for every person on the crew. His legacy wasn’t just about powerlines; it was about people—valuing safety, loyalty, and the kind of work ethic that turns coworkers into family.
Today, that legacy lives on through his daughter and grandson, who carry his vision forward with the same heart and determination. Dwain would be proud—not just of the company’s growth, but of the way his family continues to lead with integrity and grit, just like he taught them.
The Crew Behind the Connection
Meet the driving forces behind our Small Cell Team! As recognized subject matter experts, they’re the ones major carriers turn to when unexpected challenges arise. Their innovation and problem-solving have helped keep projects moving and networks growing.
With over 300+ small cell sites built across VA, MD, and DC, chances are if you spot one on a power pole, it was built by the River City Construction crew.
Shaping the Future, One Lineman at a Time
Field Safety Supervisor, Justin Saunders, and HR Generalist, Morgan Schoner, stopped by the Robeson Community College Lineman Rodeo to share some inspiring words with the graduating linemen. They had the chance to witness the impressive skills these future professionals have developed and saw firsthand the incredible potential in each of them.
A special thank you to Justin and Morgan for taking the time to meet and connect with new potential hires, helping to shape the future of our industry!

Longest Day of the Year
The summer solstice means the longest day of the year—and a lot more sun beating down on you. If you're spending your days outside, staying hydrated isn’t optional. Drink water regularly, even if you’re not feeling thirsty, and take a break in the shade when you can. Keeping ahead of the heat helps you stay sharp, steady, and ready to finish strong.
CDLs & Medical Certifications
To stay compliant with FMCSA regulations, HR is required to maintain a current copy of each CDL driver’s license and medical certificate in their DOT file. If we do not have your documentation on file, we will be reaching out directly to request it. Your prompt cooperation is both appreciated and necessary to ensure River City remains in full compliance with DOT standards.
